Reading is one of the best things you can do to improve your English language skills. It increases your vocabulary, improves your understanding of what you read, helps you choose books that interest you, increases how quickly you read and helps you enjoy reading more.
At the beginning of every class, we will have 10 minutes of silent reading or BARF (Be a Reading Freak) time to help you improve the skills listed above. You'll need to keep track of how much you read and what you read by writing a quick summary in your reading log and writing down any new vocabulary words that you came across during your reading. This will also help you see how much you read during a quarter.
I'll check your reading log each week. At the end of each quarter, you'll need to put your reading log in your quarter portfolio.
Reading Log Grading Criteria
Each week you'll receive a grade (up to 4 points) for your reading log entries based on the following criteria:
Summary (2 points) - Two to three sentences that explain what you read about
New words (1 point) - At least one new or interesting word that you found in your reading.
Date, book & author information (1 point) - The date that you read for your entry, the book title and author's name
Note: Points will be subtracted for incomplete reading log entries.
